Bejan Mahmud
Associate
Bejan Mahmud joined Flagship’s Pioneering Medicines in 2024 after completing the 2023 Flagship Fellowship program. In his role as an Associate, Bejan explores diverse areas of disease biology towards creation of therapeutic assets enabled by Flagship’s ecosystem platforms.
Bejan is a microbiologist by training with a particular focus on antimicrobial resistance. As a graduate student, he investigated the emergence and spread of resistant microbes in clinical and non-clinical settings. His graduate work also included leveraging synthetic biology tools to generate the next generation of antibiotic-sparing anti-infectives.
Originally from Tajikistan, Bejan obtained his BS in Medicinal Chemistry and MS in Biology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, working in the labs of Dr. William Tapprich and Dr. Douglas Stack. He earned his PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis in Dr. Gautam Dantas’s lab at Washington University in St. Louis.
