Ronny Straube

Head of Modeling & Simulation, Pioneering Medicines

Ronny Straube joined Flagship in 2024 as Head of Modeling & Simulation for Pioneering Medicines. Ronny and his team support Pioneering Medicines programs through development of mechanistic and fit-for-purpose mathematical models to inform questions and decisions related to early feasibility and target candidate profile of a new drug, optimal dosage, optimal modality, comparison with competitors, and more.

Before joining Flagship, Ronny led the immune-oncology quantitative systems pharmacology group at Bristol Myers Squibb where he and his team supported clinical and preclinical programs as well as regulatory interactions through development of mechanistic models at various levels of complexity. Previously Ronny spent 10 years at the Max Planck Institute for Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg,Germany focusing on basic research in Systems Biology. During that time, he also served as interim chair (W3 professor) of biomathematics at Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg.

During his academic career Ronny enjoyed research stays at China (Xiamen University) and Japan (Hokkaido University). Supported by an EMBO Short-Term Fellowship he visited the Deshaies group at Caltech where he developed a mathematical model for the dynamic regulation of Fbox protein exchange on cullin-RING ubiquitin ligases. While already at BMS he was awarded a Heisenberg Fellowship from the German Science Foundation (DFG) to conduct a 5-year research project on network motifs. His publications span a wide range from nonlinear dynamics and pattern formation, over biophysics, mathematical and systems biology, to systems pharmacology.

Ronny received a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in biophysics from the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg from which he also received the Venia Legendi in theoretical physics (Dr. rer. nat. habil.). Originally, he studied physics at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena from which he graduated with a diploma in physics.
