Head of Machine Learning

Andrew Beam is the head of machine learning at Flagship FL56, Inc. and is an assistant professor at Harvard. His research develops and applies machine learning methods to extract meaningful insights from clinical and biological datasets. At FL56, Andy develops new machine learning algorithms to improve our ability to engineer novel proteins for therapeutic and industrial applications.

Andy has authored or co-authored over 40 scientific manuscripts and is the recipient of a Pioneer Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for his work on medical artificial intelligence. His research has been featured in journals such as Science, The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and The British Medical Journal (BMJ) and has been covered in the popular press by The New York Times, Vox, and Bloomberg news.

Andy received his Ph.D. in computer science and bioinformatics from North Carolina State University for work on Bayesian neural network models of genome-wide association studies. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in biomedical informatics at Harvard Medical School working on machine learning models for healthcare data, with special focus on improving the delivery of care for preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit.

As an undergraduate at North Carolina State University, Andy tripled majored in computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering and also received a master’s degree in statistics.
